I contacted Black Swan Drainage about a leak from my upstairs shower that was causing water to come through the downstairs ceiling. I paid £80 for the diagnosis. The plumber tested around the shower drain and sealant, found water trapped beneath the flooring outside the shower, and suggested that the enclosure sealant could be the cause. However, I felt the investigation wasn’t thorough enough, and I was left without a clear answer about the source of the leak. The problem later required another plumber to investigate and cap off a leaking pipe, leaving my shower unusable. Initially, I was disappointed because I felt the £80 hadn’t helped me identify the underlying issue. However, Black Swan Drainage subsequently contacted me, refunded the £80 and shared some contacts for renovation work. I appreciate that they took my concerns seriously and made an effort to help resolve the situation. Although I was disappointed with the initial diagnosis, I’m pleased with how they handled my feedback afterwards.

Brilliant service. Came out very quickly. Very transparent about cost which was reasonable. We had an issue with a blocked waste pipe which was identified and fixed with no fuss. Very friendly and helpful about fittings we could change to avoid the same happening again. Will definitely use them again if we ever need someone.

Understanding the Importance of Using Bathroom Appliances Regularly

Bathroom appliances, such as baths, showers, and sinks, play a crucial role in maintaining the health and functionality of your plumbing system. However, when these fixtures are not used for extended periods, it can lead to unexpected problems, such as unpleasant odours caused by sewer gases entering your home. Let’s explore why this happens and what you can do to prevent it.

What is a Trap, and What Does it Do?

A trap is a curved section of pipe located beneath sinks, baths, showers, and other plumbing fixtures. Its primary purpose is to retain a small amount of water, which acts as a barrier to prevent sewer gases from escaping into your home. This water seal is a simple yet essential component of your plumbing system, ensuring your living environment remains free from foul odours and potentially harmful gases.

Why Does Infrequent Use Cause Problems?

When a bathroom appliance is not used regularly, the water in its trap can evaporate over time. Once the trap dries out, it creates an open pathway for sewer gases to enter your property. For instance:

  • Uncommon Use of Fixtures: If you have both a bath and a shower but primarily use the shower, the bath’s trap may dry out over time.
  • Extended Periods Away: During holidays or long periods when no one is using the plumbing, all traps in the property risk evaporation.

These situations can lead to unpleasant smells and, in some cases, potential health risks due to the exposure to sewer gases.

Drain Trap

How to Prevent Trap Evaporation

Fortunately, preventing this issue is simple with a few proactive measures:

Run Water Regularly:

Even if you don’t frequently use a particular fixture, run water through it periodically to replenish the trap. For example, turn on the bath taps for a few minutes every couple of weeks.

Flush Toilets:

Ensure toilets that are rarely used are flushed occasionally to maintain the water seal in their traps.

Before Extended Absences:

If you’re going on holiday or leaving the property for an extended period, run all taps, flush toilets, and consider adding a small amount of vegetable oil to traps. The oil can slow evaporation by creating a barrier on the water’s surface.

Inspect for Leaks:

A leaking trap can exacerbate evaporation and should be repaired promptly to maintain the water seal.
