Bathroom Smells But No Blockage? Here's One Hidden Cause
Introduction
Most people assume that if their bathroom smells of drains, the drains must be blocked.
Sometimes that's true.
But every now and again we come across a job that reminds us why proper investigation is just as important as clearing blockages.
This particular job started with an unpleasant smell in a customer's bathroom. Two other drainage companies had already attended the property. Both had investigated the drainage system and both had reached different conclusions, but neither had managed to identify the source of the smell or solve the problem.
The customer contacted Black Swan Drainage hoping for a fresh pair of eyes.
A persistent drain smell doesn't always mean you have a blocked drain. Sometimes the problem is hidden somewhere you'd never expect.
Starting With The Obvious
Whenever we're called to investigate drain smells, we always begin with the most likely causes.
Using our Scanprobe X40 CCTV camera, we carried out a full inspection of the drainage system.
The pipework itself looked remarkably good. There were no obvious breaks, no displaced joints and no defects that would allow foul air to escape into the property.
The only area that caught our attention was a previous repair that had been boxed in around the base of the soil vent pipe. It was enough to raise suspicion, but there was still no evidence that this was actually where the smell was coming from.
At this point, rather than making assumptions, we decided to move on to the next stage of the investigation.
A Smoke Test Often Reveals What Cameras Can't
A CCTV camera is an excellent diagnostic tool, but it only shows you the inside of the drain.
It won't always reveal how gases are escaping into a building.
To test the drainage system further, we carried out a smoke test.
Within less than a minute of introducing smoke into the drain, we could smell it inside the bathroom.
That immediately confirmed that foul air was escaping somewhere.
The frustrating part was that we still couldn't see where.
For almost ten minutes we continued introducing smoke into the drainage system, carefully inspecting every accessible area until finally we noticed something unexpected.

The Breakthrough
The smoke wasn't appearing from the boxed-in repair at all.
Instead, it seemed to be finding its way into the toilet itself.
When we lifted the toilet seat, smoke could be seen slowly drifting down into the toilet pan.
At first glance, that doesn't make much sense.
How could smoke entering the drainage system end up inside the toilet bowl?
The only explanation was that the toilet itself had failed internally.
This is why diagnosis is so important. Without the smoke test, the real fault may never have been discovered.
Our Diagnosis
Although we couldn't physically see the damage without removing the toilet, we explained our findings to the customer.
Our conclusion was that the toilet almost certainly had an internal crack somewhere between the waste outlet and the flush cone.
This tiny crack was allowing smoke, and therefore sewer gases, to travel through the body of the toilet before escaping back into the pan.
It was an unusual fault.
In fact, it's not something we see very often at all.
The customer decided they would replace the toilet themselves and let us know what they discovered once it had been removed.
Confirmation The Following Day
The following day the customer contacted us.
After removing the toilet and installing a new one, they found exactly what we had suspected.
Hidden behind the toilet was a crack linking the waste outlet to the flush cone.
Although invisible while the toilet was installed, it was enough to allow foul air into the bathroom and cause the unpleasant smell that had puzzled two previous companies.
Replacing the toilet solved the issue completely.
Even better, the customer was kind enough to leave us a fantastic review afterwards.

What Can Homeowners Learn From This?
Drain smells aren't always caused by blocked drains.
Sometimes the drainage system itself is working perfectly, but a hidden defect elsewhere allows sewer gases to escape into your home.
Common causes include:
- Damaged toilet pans
- Failed pan connectors
- Faulty toilet seals
- Cracked pipework
- Failed joints
- Defective soil vent pipe connections
Finding these faults often requires more than simply putting a camera down the drain.
Sometimes a combination of CCTV inspections, smoke testing and systematic fault-finding is needed before the true cause becomes clear.
Why We Investigate Rather Than Guess
At Black Swan Drainage, our aim isn't simply to clear blockages.
We want to identify the cause of the problem and give customers confidence that the issue has been properly diagnosed.
Sometimes the answer is straightforward.
Other times, like this job, it takes patience, experience and the right equipment to uncover something hidden in plain sight.
That's exactly why we enjoy these investigations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my bathroom smell if the drains aren't blocked?
A bathroom can smell even when the drains are clear. Hidden faults such as cracked toilets, failed seals, damaged pipework or leaking joints can allow sewer gases to escape into the room.
Can a cracked toilet cause a sewage smell?
Yes. Although uncommon, an internal crack can allow foul air to travel from the waste outlet into the toilet and escape into the bathroom.
What is a drain smoke test?
A smoke test introduces harmless smoke into the drainage system to identify where gases are escaping. It's particularly useful when CCTV inspections don't reveal an obvious defect.
Why didn't a CCTV survey find the problem?
A CCTV camera only shows the inside of the drain pipes. If the fault is within the toilet itself or elsewhere above ground, additional diagnostic methods such as smoke testing may be needed.
Should I replace my toilet if it smells?
Not necessarily. The cause should always be diagnosed first. A professional investigation can identify whether the toilet, the drainage system or another component is responsible.
