Why Drains Are Less Likely To Get Blocked In Summer
You might not give your drains much thought when the sun’s out and the barbie’s sizzling, but summer’s actually a bit of a break for your plumbing. Strange, right? But it’s true – drains are much less likely to get blocked when the weather’s warm. Let’s have a proper natter about why that is.
1. Less Rain, Less Rubbish
When it chucks it down in the autumn or winter, rain doesn’t just fall nicely into the ground – it washes muck off roads and gardens straight into your drains. Leaves, twigs, grit, all sorts of bits and bobs get swept along for the ride. That builds up and boom – your drain’s struggling.
In summer, though? We get a lot less rain, especially those big heavy downpours that cause surface flooding. So there’s simply less mess going down the drains in the first place.
2. Trees Aren’t Shedding Yet
Autumn’s the big leaf-drop season. Anyone with a garden knows the pain of clearing soggy piles of leaves that seem to appear overnight. They clog gutters, fill gullies and get into everything. But in summer? Trees are in full bloom, just quietly doing their thing. No major leaf drama – and that means drains stay clearer for longer.
3. Grease Doesn’t Stick So Easily
Here’s a grim one – when people pour fat from cooking down the sink (please don’t, by the way!), it can solidify in the pipes. In winter, the cold makes that happen fast. You end up with a fatberg before you know it.
But in summer, the warmer weather keeps things moving a bit more freely. Grease stays runnier and is less likely to cling to the inside of pipes. Still not ideal, but not quite the monster it is in colder months.
4. We’re All Out And About
Think about it – in summer, we spend more time outside. Picnics in the park, weekends away, holidays by the coast. That means fewer loo flushes, shorter showers, and less strain on the drains at home. Every little helps!
5. Groundwater’s Behaving Itself
Some of the older drainage systems out there can get overwhelmed when the ground’s soaked, especially after a long wet winter. Water seeps in through tiny cracks and joints, and it can make the whole system sluggish.
During the drier summer months, the ground’s usually more settled, so you’re not getting all that extra water creeping in where it shouldn’t be.

In A Nutshell…
Warm weather means less mess, less water, and fewer chances for things to go wrong. But that doesn’t mean drains are completely safe in summer – BBQ wipes, sun cream bottles, or even kids chucking toys down garden gullies (yep, we’ve seen it!) can still cause a bit of drama.
So, if you want to keep your drains happy all year round, the best bet is regular checks and a good clear-out now and then. And if something does start to pong or back up, give us a ring at Black Swan Drainage. We’ll sort it – no fuss, no faff, and no surprise charges.

FAQs
Why are drains less likely to get blocked in summer?
Because there's less rain and leaf-fall, and the warm weather keeps fats and grease from sticking inside the pipes. Plus, we’re out and about more, which means less pressure on household plumbing.
What causes blocked drains in other seasons?
Heavy rain in autumn and winter washes leaves and muck into drains. Cold weather also causes oils and fats to harden, which can lead to stubborn blockages.
How can I prevent blocked drains during the summer?
Avoid tipping fats or oils down the sink, keep outdoor drains clear, and check them every so often. If in doubt, give us a shout – we’ll happily pop over and take a look.
